Vestibular Rehabilitation in Albuquerque

How does vestibular rehabilitation work?

Vestibular rehabilitation at FYZICAL Albuquerque uses exercise to improve balance and reduce dizziness.  A person falls because the body and nervous system are struggling from receiving a lack (or the wrong type) of information that the brain uses to maintain balance and make appropriate postural corrections when off balance. We receive input about balance from 4 major areas - the inner ear, the visual system, the cerebellum at the base of the brain, and from thousands of receptors dispersed throughout the body within our muscles, joints, and skin. Whenever there is a dysfunction in any of these systems, a person might begin to struggle with balance. Unfortunately, as we get older, the balance system gradually weakens or declines in function. Participating in vestibular rehabilitation and physical therapy can slow this decline and re-strengthen your balance system.

In vestibular rehabilitation, a trained physical therapist evaluates which parts of the balance system are not functioning correctly and comes up with a treatment plan. At FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers, we use the proprietary bank of information and knowledge that has been evolving over the last 25 years of treating patients and studying the balance system. All of our clinicians are trained and certified to use this systematic approach to the FYZICAL Balance Paradigm. We also use cutting-edge equipment and technology to make the experience of undergoing vestibular rehabilitation more tolerable and less uncomfortable.

How can vestibular rehabilitation help you?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a form of Balance Retraining Therapy that involves challenging the body's natural postural systems by placing the patient on unsteady objects that cause the body to sway and stimulate it to make postural adjustments to prevent the individual from losing balance and falling. It has emerged over the past several years as an alternative treatment for patients with chronic non-resolved motion intolerance, visual sensitivity, and imbalance problems. This exercise uses soft, pliable surfaces, mini-trampolines, and a device called the Shuttle Balance. These items perform the function of challenging the body’s postural and balance systems to correct the position and resume a balanced and stable position. At FYZICAL of Albuquerque, we have our patients use our Solo-Step Safety Overhead System, which allows them to perform these balance exercises without falling. Just as training a muscle makes it stronger, repeatedly challenging your balance helps to reactivate and re-stimulate those systems that are responsible for maintaining balance.

Our comprehensive balance program includes assessment and evaluation, balance retraining, and vestibular rehabilitation. With balance retraining and vestibular rehabilitation, our goal is to improve balance function and visual motor control, increase general activity levels, and help your body compensate for inner ear disorders. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our balance therapy programs have a 99% balance improvement success rate.
